Pepperdine Monitoring Road and Weather Conditions
The Malibu and Calabasas campuses remain open and scheduled classes and events are taking place with modifications due to the inclement weather today, January 5, 2023. The area is expected to receive some additional rainfall and gusty winds this afternoon and possibly into the evening as the storm moves throughout the region.
At this time, there are no road closures in the area, but rocks, mud, water in the road, worker vehicles, and slow moving traffic can be expected on local roads.

Suspicious Person Escorted Off The Malibu Campus
Last night, December 7, 2022, a purported DoorDash driver, Justin Salter (pictured below), entered the Malibu Campus and later interacted with students near the student residence halls on “Res Road.”
Mr. Salter entered the Malibu Campus again today, December 8, 2022. Following student tips to Public Safety, including via LiveSafe, linking Mr. Salter with social media posts with disturbing hashtags, Pepperdine’s Public Safety department located Mr. Salter and, out of an abundance of caution, notified the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD). LASD engaged with Mr. Salter and did not perceive a credible threat. Public Safety and LASD escorted Mr. Salter off campus with a formal admonishment that he is not allowed to return to any Pepperdine campus.

Red Flag Warning – November 24-25, 2022
The National Weather Service issued a Red Flag Warning for the Malibu Coast westward to Ventura County for Thursday, November 24, 2022 at 8 AM through Friday, November 25, 2022 at 11 AM. due to Santa Ana winds of 40-55 MPH with gusts up to 65 MPH and humidity in the 5-15% range.
Red Flag Warnings issued by the National Weather Service identify time periods when conditions are ideal for wildfires. During Red Flag warnings it is especially important to:
- Report any signs of smoke immediately to emergency responders. If on the Malibu campus call Public Safety at 310.506.4441. At all other locations report smoke by calling 911.
- Use caution when disposing of cigarettes and ensure that they are completely extinguished.
- Minimize any use of open flame in outdoor settings.
- Consider taking down umbrellas and moving patio furniture inside.
During Red Flag conditions, Southern California Edison (SCE) may issue a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS), a preemptive deenergization of electrical circuits in an attempt to prevent power lines from starting a potential wildfire. This may result in the loss of power for a Pepperdine campus. While SCE has promised to advise the community in advance, and University officials are in regular communication with SCE representatives, the community should nevertheless be prepared for the possibility of a PSPS. The Department of Public Safety is monitoring the situation and is prepared to respond to potential wildfires.
Calabasas Campus Suspect Update
Jamey Jimerson, the individual who visited the Calabasas campus on October 19, 2022, was released from jail on bond today pending a court date in mid-December. The University had registered for and received notice of this action upon his release.
Out of an abundance of caution, pursuant to a plan already in place for the possibility of this person’s release, the University is implementing an enhanced security plan, which includes additional measures in Malibu and Calabasas along with close coordination with the security teams at all campuses. Public Safety is also working with law enforcement to remain informed while closely monitoring the situation and adjusting our approach accordingly to best protect the University community.
Though we are not aware of a specific connection of Mr. Jimerson to Pepperdine or any indication he will return to one of our campuses, community members should nonetheless be aware and observant.
