Update #1 – Pepperdine Monitoring SoCal Wildfire Activity and Road Closures

Pepperdine officials are continuing to monitor wildfire activity in the area, including the Getty Fire. The 405 through the Sepulveda Pass is now closed in both directions, Topanga Canyon Boulevard is closed to all but local residents, and the eastbound lanes of Pacific Coast Highway near Pacific Palisades are closed. Motorists using northbound lanes of Pacific Coast Highway from the Westside to Pepperdine should expect significant delays. 

Smoke from this fire may be seen from multiple locations in the area including the Malibu campus. At this time, there is no impact to any of Pepperdine’s campuses. Campus operations are normal, and classes will be held as regularly scheduled.  

Please be advised of the following:

  • Community members whose homes are affected by the fire or road closures should follow the directions of their local governmental agencies. 
  • Road condition information is available on the University’s Road Condition hotline at 310.506.ROAD (7623).

Pepperdine officials are monitoring wildfire activity in the area, including the Getty Fire.  Southbound lanes and several off ramps on the 405 through the Sepulveda Pass are currently closed, and smoke from this fire may be seen from multiple locations in the area. At this time there is no impact to any of Pepperdine’s campuses. Campus operations are normal, and classes will be held as regularly scheduled.

Red Flag Warning – October 27-28, 2019

The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag warning for the Ventura County Coast, L.A. County Coast (Malibu to Hollywood Hills), Santa Monica Mountains, and San Gabriel Valley beginning at 10 PM Sunday, October 27 through 6 PM Monday, October 28. Forecasters expect 20-30 MPH winds from the northeast with gusts up to 40-50 MPH. In mountain areas of L.A. County winds of 25-35 MPH with gusts of 50-60 MPH are expected. 

Red Flag warnings issued by the National Weather Service identify time periods when conditions are ideal for wildfires. During Red Flag warnings it is especially important to:

  • Report any signs of smoke immediately to emergency responders. If on the Malibu campus call Public Safety at 310.506.4441. At all other locations report smoke by calling 911.
  • Use caution when disposing of cigarettes and ensure that they are completely extinguished.
  • Minimize any use of open flame in outdoor settings.
  • Consider taking down umbrellas and moving patio furniture inside.

Pepperdine Public Safety is monitoring the situation and is prepared to respond to potential wildfires. No SCE Public Safety Power Shut Off at Malibu Campus This Weekend

This afternoon, area residents received notice that Southern California Edison (SCE) may activate a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) for this weekend. Contrary to what was published, Pepperdine officials confirmed with SCE this advisory does not apply to circuits powering the Malibu campus. 

Pepperdine officials will continue to monitor the situation and will be in regular communication with SCE.
