Pepperdine Monitoring Sweetwater Fire – Update #3
The Sweetwater Fire continues to burn and is now 40 acres, with 20% containment, and forward progress has been stopped. Smoke from the fires can be seen on campus. The University is monitoring the situation very closely and is in touch with fire and other officials. All roads surrounding the Malibu campus remain open, and all campus operations remain normal.
Pacific Coast Highway remains open. No evacuations have been issued at this time, and wind conditions are not exacerbating the fire.

Pepperdine Monitoring Sweetwater Fire – Update #2
Pepperdine continues to monitor the Sweetwater fire burning east of the Malibu campus near Pacific Coast Highway and Sweetwater Canyon Rd. The fire is now five acres in size and Los Angeles County Fire continues to fight the fire with multiple ground and air resources, including helicopters that are utilizing our reservoirs at Alumni Park.
The fire department is staging on Pacific Coast Highway, but currently Pacific Coast Highway remains open. No evacuations have been issued at this time and wind conditions are not exacerbating the fire.

Pepperdine Monitoring Sweetwater Canyon Fire
Pepperdine has received information from L.A. County Fire Department of a vegetation fire burning east of the Malibu campus near Pacific Coast Highway and Sweetwater Canyon Rd. Smoke is visible from Pepperdine’s campus. Firefighters are on scene addressing the fire, with ground and air support. We are closely monitoring the situation. At this time, the fire is not threatening the Malibu campus.

Update on Road Conditions Near the Malibu Campus
The Malibu campus is open, and classes will be held as regularly scheduled today, February 5, 2019. All major routes to campus are open at this time.
Drivers are urged to make personal safety their first priority, using caution and good judgment when considering travel along the roads leading to campus as fog, rocks, mud, and debris may be encountered. At this time, the least vulnerable route to campus may be Pacific Coast Highway from the south. Additional rain is forecasted throughout the day, and conditions may change unexpectedly.
The University will continue to monitor road conditions, and any critical changes will be shared on the Road Conditions Hotline at 310.506.ROAD. Community members are advised to regularly check the hotline before traveling to campus, especially during inclement weather conditions.
