Pepperdine Campus Operations Normal Following Earthquake

Posted on

A 4.6 magnitude earthquake struck Southern California today at 1:47 PM Pacific Time with a reported epicenter near Decker Canyon, with at least two smaller aftershocks following shortly thereafter. The shaking from the initial earthquake was felt on the University’s Southern California campuses, and in particular at Malibu and Calabasas. At this time, the University is not aware of any injuries or damage as a result of the earthquake. Utility service continues at all University campuses, and there are no reported impacts to campus routes.

In case of an earthquake, the Pepperdine community is reminded to follow the Duck, Cover, and Hold On procedures:

  • Duck under an object, such as a desk or table if inside, to prevent any falling objects from hitting you;
  • Cover your head and neck;
  • Hold on to the furniture to ensure it does not shake/move away from you.
  • When the shaking stops, leave the building.

Additional information regarding earthquake preparedness is available on the University’s Emergency Information website.

In-Person Classes and Normal Operations to Resume on Campuses Tuesday

Posted on

Pepperdine officials continue to monitor the weather conditions in Southern California that began Sunday and are expected to continue into the week. The forecast for the remainder of today and into tomorrow indicates less precipitation compared to the last 24 hours. Malibu Canyon Road, Kanan Road, and Pacific Coast Highway are currently open, and the commute to Southern California campuses on Monday morning was reasonable and free from major delays.

Based on this information and positive facilities reports from our campuses, University officials plan to resume in-person classes and normal operations at all Southern California campuses Tuesday. This includes a resumption of the Calabasas – Malibu shuttle on a modified schedule. For this week it will depart Calabasas at 7:20 AM and then leave the Malibu campus at 5:15 PM, with no service in between those hours.

If conditions change and normal operations cannot resume tomorrow, University officials will notify the community by approximately 6 AM tomorrow morning.

All employees and students are encouraged to drive slowly and carefully, leave plenty of extra time for travel, and remain informed about conditions for Pepperdine’s Southern California campuses by utilizing the following resources:

  • Malibu Campus Road hotline: 310.506.ROAD (7623)
  • Pepperdine’s Toll-Free Emergency Hotline: 888.286.5659

Pepperdine officials continue to monitor the weather conditions in Southern California that began today and are expected to continue into the week. Due to a set of unique factors – including a continuing disruptive weather pattern and the potential for heavy rain through Monday, limited visibility with increasingly gusty winds, debris flows and deteriorating area road conditions – business operations will be modified at all Pepperdine Southern California campuses on Monday, February 5, 2024 as follows:

    • All classes at Seaver College are canceled.
    • In-person classes for all graduate schools are canceled. Graduate schools will communicate directly with students regarding whether any classes will be conducted remotely.
  • Employees
    • Non-Critical Support Staff should connect with their supervisors and plan to work remotely unless otherwise dictated by department leadership.
    • Critical Support Personnel may need to report to campuses and should follow established departmental protocols, contacting their supervisor for determination on whether to come to campus if they can do so safely.
  • Events, Student Services, and Dining
    • In-person events scheduled to take place at one of Pepperdine’s Southern California campuses on Monday will be canceled.
    • Residence Life staff will be on-site at the Malibu campus.  Other student services remain available and accessible through usual phone or email methods. TimelyCare is also available for 24/7 medical/mental health support.
    • Dining Services will remain in operation for on-campus residents, and modified food service will be available on the Malibu campus. For updated hours and locations, please visit the Pepperdine Dining Services website.
