Monitoring the Current Rain Storm in Southern California
Pepperdine officials have been preparing for, are monitoring, and are actively managing impacts to our campuses due to the current rain storm in the Southern California area. The national weather service has identified this as a major storm system that may continue to bring heavy rain and wind to the area through Wednesday, February 7, 2024. This storm may result in flooding, debris flow, and/or impacts to local area roads.
Currently, all campuses are operating normally. The University’s Emergency Operations Committee will continue to evaluate conditions and campus impacts, including any road closures, and information from government officials and other local resources. Please note, decisions regarding class cancellations, or campus closures where only critical support personnel would report to campus, are typically made by the Emergency Operations Committee before 6 AM on days affected by storms. On Monday morning, February 5, the University will send a community update – whether classes remain as scheduled or are canceled. Going forward, if classes are canceled, the University will update the information resources listed below, and email a message to the community.
All employees and students are encouraged to drive slowly and carefully, leave plenty of extra time for travel, and remain informed about conditions for Pepperdine’s Southern California campuses by utilizing the following resources:

Red Flag Warning – December 9-10, 2023
The National Weather Service issued a Red Flag Warning for Los Angeles and Ventura Counties for Saturday, December 9, 2023 from 10 AM to Sunday, December 10, 2023 at 6 PM due to Santa Ana winds of 20-40 MPH with gusts up to 70 MPH and humidity in the 6-18% range.
Red Flag Warnings issued by the National Weather Service identify time periods when conditions are ideal for wildfires. During Red Flag warnings it is especially important to:
- Report any signs of smoke immediately to emergency responders. If on the Malibu campus call Public Safety at 310.506.4441. At all other locations report smoke by calling 911.
- Use caution when disposing of cigarettes and ensure that they are completely extinguished.
- Minimize any use of open flame in outdoor settings.
- Consider taking down umbrellas and moving patio furniture inside.
During Red Flag conditions, Southern California Edison (SCE) may issue a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS), a preemptive deenergization of electrical circuits in an attempt to prevent power lines from starting a potential wildfire. This may result in the loss of power for a Pepperdine campus. While SCE has promised to advise the community in advance, and University officials are in regular communication with SCE representatives, the community should nevertheless be prepared for the possibility of a PSPS. Further details on a PSPS and how you can prepare are available here.
The Department of Public Safety is monitoring the situation and is prepared to respond to potential wildfires.
