High Wind Advisory

The National Fire Weather Service is reporting Santa Ana wind conditions beginning this morning and continuing through 4 a.m. Tuesday morning across the Santa Monica Mountains. In mountain areas, potentially damaging wind gusts of 60-65mph are possible, with 40-50mph gusts occurring along the coast and in the valley. Watch for downed tree limbs and power lines, and use caution if driving a high profile vehicle. Strong winds elevate the fire weather concern, but a Red Flag Warning has not been issued.

Red Flag Warning

The National Fire Weather Service issued a Red Flag Warning for the Santa Monica Mountains (and other areas) beginning this morning at 4:00 am and going through tomorrow, Wednesday, November 6 at 3:00 pm. Strong surface high pressure building into the great basin tonight will set the stage for a moderate Santa Ana wind event across the area. The strongest Northeast winds will occur across Ventura & Los Angeles counties, with the winds developing across the mountains then filtering down to the coastal and valley areas. The winds will peak in strength this morning then slowly diminish this afternoon as the offshore winds develop. Relative humidity will drop overnight and bottom out in the low teens and single digits on today. Given the combination of gusty winds & low relative humidity, critical fire weather conditions are expected across all coastal areas of Los Angeles County.

Red Flag warnings issued by the National Weather Service identify time periods when conditions are ideal for wildfires. During Red Flag warnings it is especially important to:

  • Report any signs of smoke immediately to emergency responders. If on the Malibu campus call Public Safety at (310) 506-4441. At all other locations report smoke by calling 911.
  • Use caution when disposing of cigarettes and ensure that they are completely extinguished.
  • Minimize any use of open flame in outdoor settings.

Pepperdine Public Safety is monitoring the situation and is prepared to respond to potential wildfires. Emergency Power Outage – Malibu Campus – Update #1

While making the necessary repairs, SCE discovered an additional piece of equipment that must be replaced. SCE estimates it will be 5:30 a.m. Tuesday morning by the time the equipment is delivered to campus, installed, and the power restored.

Emergency Power Outage – Malibu Campus

Southern California Edison (SCE) will be making an emergency repair to the Tyler Campus Center (TCC) main power system beginning around 8 p.m. to avoid a potential system failure.  The Malibu campus will remain open and classes will meet as scheduled.

The Department of Public Safety (DPS) is maintaining a perimeter around the TCC loading dock, and SCE has asked that the Pepperdine community avoid the area. The repair will require shutting off power to any buildings which are fed by this equipment. These  include the following Malibu campus buildings:

4)      HH

5)      HAWC

6)      APC

7)      RAC

8)      Elkins

9)      Payson

10)   PLC

11)   PCC

12)   Dorms

13)   Towers

14)   Lovernich
