Travel To Poland Suspended
Since the outbreak of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, University officials have monitored the situation closely and contemplated how events may impact the safety of University travelers. Due to an explosion in Przewodow, Poland today, which killed two people and is under investigation by Polish and US authorities as a possible Russian missile attack, Pepperdine is suspending all travel to Poland until further notice. University officials will continue to monitor this situation and track the Russia/Ukraine conflict for additional potential impacts to University international travel. Community updates will be provided as needed.
All other international travel remains governed by Pepperdine’s International Travel Policy. Travelers are reminded to log their travel in the University’s travel log supported by International SOS; instructions for doing so are available in WaveNet. Additionally, individuals should remain aware of current events throughout their travels.
Red Flag Warning – November 16, 2022
The National Weather Service issued a Red Flag Warning for Los Angeles and Ventura Counties for Wednesday, November 16, 2022 from 7 AM to 7 PM due to strong northeast winds of 40-60 MPH.
Red Flag Warnings issued by the National Weather Service identify time periods when conditions are ideal for wildfires. During Red Flag warnings it is especially important to:
- Report any signs of smoke immediately to emergency responders. If on the Malibu campus call Public Safety at 310.506.4441. At all other locations report smoke by calling 911.
- Use caution when disposing of cigarettes and ensure that they are completely extinguished.
- Minimize any use of open flame in outdoor settings.
- Consider taking down umbrellas and moving patio furniture inside.
During Red Flag conditions, Southern California Edison (SCE) may issue a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS), a preemptive deenergization of electrical circuits in an attempt to prevent power lines from starting a potential wildfire. This may result in the loss of power for a Pepperdine campus. While SCE has promised to advise the community in advance, and University officials are in regular communication with SCE representatives, the community should nevertheless be prepared for the possibility of a PSPS. The Department of Public Safety is monitoring the situation and is prepared to respond to potential wildfires.
Suspect in Custody – Calabasas Campus Reopens Tomorrow
This afternoon, Pepperdine officials were notified the suspect involved in the incident on the Calabasas Campus was arrested yesterday by the Los Angeles Police Department and remains in custody. We are grateful for the thorough work by law enforcement and all who were involved in ensuring the safety of our community.
In addition, Pepperdine’s public safety team, in collaboration with local law enforcement, answered a report of a loud noise near the Drescher campus. After a search, law enforcement concluded it was most likely a car backfiring, and law enforcement has cleared the scene.
The Calabasas campus will reopen tomorrow, Friday, October 21, 2022.
Pepperdine is committed to student, faculty, and staff safety and well being, as well as to working with our law enforcement partners to protect the University community.
Suspicious Person Visited Calabasas Campus Earlier Today
A suspicious person entered the Calabasas Campus this morning and left moments later. Upon review of video footage, it appears he was armed. This person left a suspicious package behind in the lobby. Upon discovery of the package, our Public Safety department notified the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD); LASD cleared the building and verified the package was not an explosive device.
Prioritizing campus community safety, the University will continue to work closely with LASD to further investigate this incident. Additional University security personnel will be present on the Calabasas Campus, and out of an abundance of caution, the Calabasas campus will be closed tomorrow, Thursday, October 20, 2022.
