Borderline Bar and Grill Shooting – Update #3
The University is heartbroken as we continue to monitor developments following last night’s tragic events at Borderline Bar and Grill. The Emergency Operations Committee (EOC) convened shortly after the incident and gathered on campus to coordinate the University’s response.
We continue to pray for the victims and their families, and all of us at Pepperdine are committed to assisting our community through this tragedy in every way possible. At this time, Stauffer Chapel will be open and staffed throughout day for those in need of community and pastoral care.
Pepperdine University plans to continue with the routine of our normal class schedule to provide structure and community for our students. We acknowledge that there is nothing routine about today and encourage students to use their discretion about attending class and prioritizing their health and well-being.

Active Shooter at Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks – Update #2
At approximately 11:15 PM yesterday evening, an active shooter opened fired at Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks, California. The University has learned that multiple Pepperdine students were at the venue at the time of the shooting, including students from Seaver College and the School of Law. University officials have been working on site with law enforcement to confirm their safety and well-being, and our prayers and condolences are with everyone impacted by this senseless act of violence.
At this time, classes will be held as scheduled for today, November 8, 2018. Students who need to adjust their class schedules today as a result of yesterday’s event are encouraged to do so.
In this time of tragedy, the University is committed to assisting members of our community impacted by this event. Please note the following resources are available to you:
- Students may contact the Counseling Center at 310.506.4210 or student.counseling.center@pepperdine.edu. The Counseling Center provides free, confidential emotional/psychological support to all Pepperdine students.
- Faculty and staff may access counseling services through their Employee Assistance Program. Details are available on the HR website or by contacting HR at 310.506.4397.
- Pastoral support is available to the Pepperdine community through the Office of the Chaplain. Contact chaplain Sara Barton at sara.barton@pepperdine.edu or associate chaplain Eric Wilson at eric.wilson@pepperdine.edu or at 310.506.4275.
A prayer service for the campus community has been scheduled for today at noon in Smothers Theatre.

We are deeply shocked and saddened by the tragic events that unfolded last night at Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks. The University has confirmed that several Pepperdine students were in attendance at the time of the shooting, and University officials have been working with law enforcement to confirm the well-being of our students. Pepperdine is offering counseling and support services for our community of students, parents, faculty, staff, and alumni. Our prayers are with everyone impacted by this senseless act of violence.

The University has received reports that several Pepperdine students were at Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks this evening when a gunman reportedly entered the location and began shooting. At this time, the University is working to identify and provide support to those students. Pepperdine officials are in contact with appropriate governmental agencies and will provide updates on the status of the situation as information is available.
