Pepperdine Monitoring Weather Conditions
Since the Woolsey Fire, University officials have continued to closely monitor campus conditions, especially in areas prone to increased debris flow due to the burn. Over the last several months, the University has implemented multiple proactive slope stabilization and erosion control measures in partnership with our civil and geotechnical engineers and with Los Angeles County civil and flood control engineers.
Community members should note that while the City of Malibu will begin implementing mandatory evacuations for specific properties in certain areas of Malibu tomorrow morning, Pepperdine’s Malibu campus is not currently under evacuation and anticipates normal operations will take place tomorrow, January 15, 2019. Community members who reside in evacuation areas are encouraged to follow the directives of local agencies; Los Angeles County information can be found here: http://www.lacounty.gov/larain/.
During rain events, Pacific Coast Highway from the south is likely to be the least impacted route to campus. Major access routes to campus are open at this time, including Malibu Canyon Road and Kanan Dume Road, but conditions remain fluid, and drivers are urged to use good judgment when considering whether to travel along these canyon roads due to the possibility of falling rocks and debris flow.
At this time, the University continues to monitor the hillsides impacted by the fires and will continue to communicate regularly with all students, faculty, and staff in the event of a campus closure or other departures from normal campus operations. Urgent or critical information will be delivered via Everbridge, the University’s emergency alert system, and the latest information is available on the University’s Emergency Information Page. Community members are also encouraged to call the University’s Road Conditions Hotline at 310.506.ROAD for up-to-date information on road closures in the Malibu area.
Pepperdine Monitoring Road and Weather Conditions – Update #1
Road conditions continue to change.
- PCH is now open in both directions.
- Southbound Malibu Canyon is closed from the Tunnel to Malibu due to a rock slide.
Community members should anticipate changing road conditions and exercise caution while driving, especially if using canyon roads, including Malibu Canyon and Kanan Dume.

Pepperdine Monitoring Road and Weather Conditions
The Malibu and Calabasas campuses remain open and classes are still being held as scheduled today, December 6, 2018. The area is expected to receive some additional rainfall this afternoon and possibly into the evening as the storm moves throughout the region.
Please note the following road closures in the area:
- Pacific Coast Highway is closed in both directions from Trancas Canyon Road to Las Posas Road.
- Encinal Canyon Road is closed in both directions.
- Decker Canyon Road is closed in both directions.
Kanan Dume Road has now reopened following a brief closure this morning. During this rain event, Pacific Coast Highway from the south is likely to be the least impacted route to campus.
Community members should anticipate changing road conditions and exercise caution while driving, especially if using canyon roads, including Malibu Canyon and Kanan Dume.

Malibu Campus Closed and Classes Canceled – November 29, 2018
Due to rain in the area and uncertainty with road conditions, classes are canceled and offices are closed on the Malibu campus for today, November 29, 2018. All other campuses remain open at this time. Faculty and staff working on the Malibu campus should not report to work unless they are critical support personnel, as designated by their supervisor. Critical support personnel on the Malibu campus should work with supervisors according to departmental protocols for determining whether to report to campus if they can safely do so.
At this time, faculty, staff, and students are advised not to use canyon roads near the Malibu campus, including to access the Calabasas campus. Calabasas employees with commutes affected by canyon roads should work with their supervisor. Pepperdine will continue to monitor conditions in the area.
