Pepperdine Monitoring Wildfire Activity
Pepperdine officials are monitoring wildfire activity in southern California.
The National Weather Service is using the word “extreme” to describe today’s Red Flag conditions to emphasize the importance of the warning. This means that weather conditions, including high winds with predicted gusts up to 50-70 MPH, and very low humidity, between 1-5%, pose an extreme risk of spreading any fires that ignite in the region.
Fires are not currently affecting any University campus. Campuses are open and classes are in session as regularly scheduled.
Please be advised of the following:
- Community members whose homes are affected by the fire or road closures should follow the directions of their local governmental agencies.
- Road condition information is available on the University’s Road Condition hotline at 310.506.ROAD (7623).
Red Flag Warning Issued for October 29-31, 2019
The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag warning for Los Angeles and Ventura Counties beginning at 11 PM tonight through Thursday at 6 PM. Peak fire danger conditions are expected on Wednesday with gusts of 50–70 MPH and humidity as low as 1–5%. Any fire ignitions could have a rapid rate of spread and potential for extreme fire behavior. Winds will continue in the same direction through Saturday but are expected to be significantly weaker.
Red Flag warnings issued by the National Weather Service identify time periods when conditions are ideal for wildfires. During Red Flag warnings it is especially important to:
- Report any signs of smoke immediately to emergency responders. If on the Malibu campus, call Public Safety at 310.506.4441. At all other locations report smoke by calling 911.
- Use caution when disposing of cigarettes and ensure that they are completely extinguished.
- Minimize any use of open flame in outdoor settings.
- Consider taking down umbrellas and moving patio furniture inside.
