Shelter-In-Place Order for the Malibu Campus Temporarily Lifted

Posted on

Pepperdine’s EOC has temporarily lifted the shelter-in-place order for the Malibu campus. Individuals on campus are encouraged to remain on campus due to road closures and severe congestion restricting travel. Please use this opportunity for self care—return to your room, rest, take a shower, or continue to spend time with community in Firestone Fieldhouse, Tyler Campus Center, and/or Payson Library.

Depending on weather and fire conditions, the University may need to reissue a shelter-in-place order. Please have a go bag ready in the event we need to shelter-in-place again.

Pepperdine Monitoring Wildfires – #4

Pepperdine is continuing to monitor ongoing fire activity and is in close contact with fire officials. The University’s shelter-in-place protocols are currently active and are plans that Los Angeles County Fire has approved as the safest course of action. All community members on campus should remain in their designated relocation site at Tyler Campus Center or Firestone Fieldhouse where both food and medical services are available. University officials will continue to provide updates during this wildfire event.

EOC Activates Shelter-in-Place Procedures for Malibu Campus

The University continues to closely monitor the Woolsey Fire, which started on November 8, 2018, in the Bell Canyon area north of the 101 freeway and has been driven by Santa Ana winds to Malibu.

Due to the fire, Pepperdine’s Emergency Operations Committee (EOC) has requested the relocation of students, faculty, and staff, presently on the Malibu campus.

  • Residents of on-campus apartments, Seaside, and Drescher along with any community members with pets or service animals should relocate to the Firestone Fieldhouse.
  • Students in all residence halls, Towers, and residents of Baxter Drive and Tiner Court should relocate to the Tyler Campus Center.

The University, in coordination with the Los Angeles County Fire Department, has determined that it is safer to shelter-in-place—remaining on campus—during this wildfire than it is to leave the campus.

Relocation Center Overview

Both relocations centers are centrally located on the Malibu campus and provide resources such as food, water, and restrooms, along with video and wireless internet access. Bring only necessities such as a pillow, blanket, book/laptop, medications, eyeglasses, and minimum personal hygiene articles.

The University also maintains additional emergency supplies including blankets, masks, medical supplies, and flashlights. Once at a relocation center, Pepperdine officials will advise you further.  Remain calm, limit your physical activity, and remain in the areas designated for students, faculty, and staff.

Pepperdine Monitoring Wildfires – Update #3

Posted on Updated on

The Woolsey and Hill fires continue, and flames have jumped to the south side of the 101 in some locations. Smoke from the fires can be seen on campus. The Malibu campus is currently experiencing a campus-wide power outage which is also affecting Calabasas, Malibu, and other surrounding areas.

The University is monitoring the situation very closely and is in touch with fire and other officials.  We may need to relocate the community to our shelter-in-place locations (which are the Tyler Campus Center and the Firestone Fieldhouse).  In the event we begin these protocols, Housing and Residence Life representatives will be main points of contact for information and instructions.  We will also be sending notifications via Everbridge, our mass communication system which will attempt to connect with you via email, text message, or by phone.  You may not always receive these messages or get them in a timely manner if the power is out. This is why messaging through Housing and Residence Life representatives will be so important.
