Malibu and Calabasas Classes Canceled and Campuses Closed Today

Classes are canceled and offices are closed on the Malibu and Calabasas campuses for today, November 9, 2018. All other campuses remain open at this time. Faculty and staff working on the Malibu and Calabasas campuses should not report to work unless they are critical support personnel, as designated by their supervisor. Critical support personnel on the Malibu campus should follow established departmental protocols for determining whether to report to campus if they can safely do so.

Spring and summer online registration for Seaver College will continue as scheduled. Services in the Counseling Center, chaplain’s office, and Student Health Center also will be available throughout the day.

A number of strong, wind-driven fires continue to burn in Los Angeles and Ventura Counties, with all manner of firefighting efforts being employed, including air operations. The Calabasas campus is now under mandatory evacuation and was vacated yesterday evening. The Malibu campus is not currently affected by these evacuation orders, but the fires continue to burn and could be a threat to the campus if they are driven down toward the coast by winds. Many of our community members living in these surrounding areas have been impacted by the fires and have been displaced by the evacuation orders.   

The University will continue to monitor all conditions in the area, and in particular the Hill and Woolsey fires. Mandatory evacuation orders are currently in place for large and growing portions of Calabasas, Agoura Hills, Westlake Village, Oak Park, and other areas. The 101 freeway remains closed in both directions between the 23 freeway and the Santa Rosa exit.

Pepperdine Monitoring Wildfires – Update #2

A number of fires continue to burn in Los Angeles and Ventura Counties. These are strong, wind-driven fires. All manner of firefighting efforts are being employed, including air operations. The University is monitoring all conditions in the area, and in particular the Hill and Woolsey fires.

The Malibu campus is not currently affected by these evacuation orders. The Calabasas campus was vacated earlier and is now under mandatory evacuation.

This is a very fluid situation and is developing rapidly with changing fire conditions. Mandatory evacuation orders are currently in place for large and growing portions of Calabasas, Agoura Hills, Westlake Village, Oak Park, and other areas. The 101 freeway remains closed in both directions between the 23 freeway and the Santa Rosa exit.

Pepperdine Monitoring Wildfires – Update #1

A number of fires are currently burning in Ventura County. The University continues to monitor all conditions in the area, and in particular the Hill and Woolsey fires. The 101 freeway remains closed in both directions between the Wendy and Santa Rosa exits due to the Hill Fire. However, with its current location, wind direction, and the terrain in front of the fire’s leading edge, the Woolsey Fire presents a potential threat to the Malibu campus, Calabasas, Agoura Hills, and Westlake Village.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department has issued a mandatory evacuation order for areas north of the 101 freeway, between Valley Circle Blvd and Lindero Canyon Road. If you are located in this area, please follow the mandatory evacuation notice, and head toward Los Angeles. If you do not have other alternatives, you could go to the Malibu campus.

The Malibu campus is not affected by this evacuation order. If the Malibu campus does become affected by the fires, Pepperdine has worked with the Los Angeles County Fire Department, and we shelter in place.

Pepperdine Monitoring Ventura County Wildfires

Pepperdine has received information from Ventura County Fire concerning wildfires in the Newbury Park area. News outlets are reporting the 101 freeway is closed in both directions from Ventu Park through Santa Rosa.

The fire is not currently affecting any University campus.
